Südost-Forschungen invites scholars to submit contributions from all areas of the history of Southeastern Europe for its two upcoming issues (volumes 83 and 84).

Südost-Forschungen is one of the oldest periodical publications on the history of Southeastern Europe. Its first volume appeared in 1936, and the journal, which appears as a yearbook, has since developed into one of the leading publishing organs of German and international research
on the history of Southeastern Europe. For the coming year, Südost-Forschungen plans to switch from one yearbook to two issues per year.

Südost-Forschungen is committed to a broad and interdisciplinary approach to history and publishes on topics ranging from political issues and cultural, linguistic, and art history to economic and social history, historical geography, and the history of religion. The journal
endeavours to cover the region’s history from the Byzantine era to contemporary history. Part of the journal’s mission is to present research from the region to an international audience, thus serving as a platform for excellent regional scholarship. This objective is also reflected in the
journal’s extensive review section, in which numerous works in the languages of the region are discussed.

After preliminary consideration by the editorial team, contributions submitted to Südost-Forschungen will undergo a double-blind process by two peer reviewers. The journal accepts manuscripts in German, English, and French. While most research articles are stand-alone
papers, the journal also invites submissions for a special thematic section, which usually consists of three to four research articles linked by an overarching theme.

The maximum length of articles is 10,000 words (including notes). In addition to research articles, the journal accepts detailed review articles and reflections on current research trends and the region’s historiography (in the section “Aus der Südosteuropa-Forschung”).
Occasionally, the journal publishes edited sources and commentaries.

Pamela Ballinger invitée par le CETOBaC en février-mars 2024

Pamela Ballinger is Professor of History and the Fred Cuny Chair in the History of Human Rights in the Department of History at the University of Michigan.

Her areas of expertise include human rights, forced migration, refugees, fascism, infrastructure, seaspace, and modern Mediterranean and Balkan history. She is currently at work on two book projects: An Intimate Sea: Sovereignties, Cartographies and Nature along the Modern Adriatic and Materializing Mussolini’s Mediterranean: Infrastructures of Fascist Empire.

Women in Eastern and Southeastern Europe and the Experience of War. An interconfessional, interreligious and interethnic Perspective (19th to 21st centuries)

Titles and abstracts (up to maximum 250 words) should be submitted to Marian Pătru at marianpatru@gmail.com by February 29, 2024.

The conference will take place in Sibiu/Romania on 23–24 May 2024 (hybrid presence).

War is generally viewed as a male-only affair, with almost total disregard for the important role women play during and after armed conflict. The main goal of the conference is to analyse how women in different historical, social, cultural and religious contexts have dealt
with war and its effects. The conference will focus in particular but not exclusively on questions such as: What role did women play in the wars that confronted Southeastern Europe (the various armed conflicts of the 19th century, the two world wars, the wars in the
former Yugoslavia in the 1990s, the war in Ukraine etc.)? How did they contribute to the post-war reconstruction of their countries? What role did women’s religious organizations of different denominations play in this context? What are the differences between male (political, historiographical, etc.) and female discourses on war? etc. A special session of the conference will be dedicated to the war in Ukraine: The Ukrainian women living as refugees in Sibiu will be invited to speak about their experience of the war.

The conference is being organized with the financial support of the German National Committee of the Lutheran World Federation/Hanover.

The Left in Southeast Europe: Identities and Discourses

Call for Papers for a conference to be held on 4th and 5th April 2024, University of Tirana

Right after the democratic transition, scholars have pointed at the great diversity of communist successor parties’ identities and discourses. Some of them, in fact, were able to successfully turn into social democratic parties, rejecting the wrongdoings of the previous regime. Others transmuted towards nationalism, revisiting recent history through a patriotic lens. Finally, some groupings resisted the change and kept their Communist banner, assessing the capitalist and democratic transition negatively.

The memory of the past was indeed not the only sphere of divergence between the fellow parties since they came to vary in economic and socio-cultural issues too. The present call wants to explore communist successor parties’ identities and discourses thirty years after the transition. It both welcomes papers enquiring on the causal roots of communist successors’ identity and on left-wing discursive practices.

DESCRIPTION DU SEMINAIRE

Ce nouveau programme du séminaire PeTaLes, prévu sur 3 ans, fait dialoguer des littératures de l’aire culturelle euro-asiatique qui échappent habituellement à la perspective comparatiste sur la question de l’historiographie littéraire. Les objectifs sont la confrontation critique des modèles historiographiques passés et présents avec ces littératures, une réflexion sur les conditions épistémologiques, institutionnelles et normatives qui ont présidé à l’élaboration des modèles, le développement d’approches transnationales/transrégionales réalisables à un niveau pratique.
