Experiencing the Elusive: Understanding Emotions in Social Sciences

The doctoral students of the three organising institutions (CETOBaC-EHESS, Galatasaray University, and the Institute for Mediterranean Studies in Rethymno) organize a doctoral workshop as part of the EURETES programme “Connections and mobility in the Mediterranean”.

 

Partially inherited from Enlightenment thought, the opposition of emotion to reason, body to mind, and natural sciences to social sciences has resulted in the marginalisation of the study of emotions and affects by devaluing them within the latter (Perriard & Van de Velde, 2021). Although they were addressed throughout the 20th century across various disciplines – without, however, occupying a central role – from Émile Durkheim and Max Weber in sociology to the Annales School in history, emotions truly found their place in the social sciences starting in the 1990s. Even if this theme was already present, it gained visibility to the point of creating a genuine trend in the research world, notably following what was later termed the “affective turn” (Clough, 2008).

The study of emotions requires a multidisciplinary approach (Davidson & al., 2008). Our objective is to discuss emotions in a broad sense using diverse media.

Partiellement héritée de la pensée des Lumières, l’opposition des émotions à la raison, du corps à l’esprit et des sciences naturelles aux sciences sociales a eu pour effet de marginaliser l’étude des émotions et des affects en les dévalorisant au sein de ces dernières (Perriard et Van de Velde, 2021). Bien qu’elles aient été abordées tout au long du XXe siècle dans diverses disciplines sans pour autant occuper une place centrale, depuis Émile Durkheim et Max Weber en sociologie, ou par l’École des Annales en histoire, les émotions ont véritablement trouvé leur place en sciences sociales à partir des années 1990. Même si ce thème était déjà présent, il a gagné en visibilité jusqu’à créer une véritable tendance dans le monde de la recherche, notamment à partir de ce qui a été désigné ultérieurement comme « affective turn » (Clough, 2008).

Programme

Cet appel s’adresse prioritairement aux doctorants, tout en étant ouvert aux étudiants de master. Les candidat·es sont invité·es à soumettre une proposition de communication avant le 31 mars 2026. Les propositions devront être envoyées à l’adresse : journeesdoctorales2026@gmail.com.
