The École française d’Athènes (EFA), Roma Tre University, the Centre Jacques Berque and the CNRS are organising a doctoral Summer School from 30th of June to the 4th of July 2025 at the École française d’Athènes. It will bring together between 10 and 15 PhD and master students, accompanied by around ten trainers from research and higher education institutions of different nationalities. This international doctoral seminar is part of the research programme entitled “Interactions, juxtapositions and religious imbrications in Greece and the Balkans (20th-21st centuries)” supported by the École française d’Athènes (2022-2026) in the framework of its research axis “The manufacture of cultural variation”. 

Since 2022, this programme has brought together specialists from several universities and research centres (Universities of Macedonia, Thessaly, Zadar, Roma, Aix-Marseille, Stanford, the Romanian Academy of Sciences, Bard College, CNRS) working on the issue of interreligious connections and interactions in the Balkans. More generally, they are part of the field of research on “shared sanctuaries” in the Mediterranean world, a field that has seen a proliferation of work since the 2000s. These studies show that religious systems are far from being closed and impervious to one another. On the contrary, on a Mediterranean scale as in the Balkans, it appears that the faithful of different religions can cross the religious boundaries more often than one might think at first sight, to go and pray in sacred spaces belonging or related to another religion (sanctuaries, tombs, places of worship, monasteries, caves, etc.), without in any way converting. These crossings are generally motivated by a quest for spiritual efficacy (grace, healing, childbirth, protection, etc.).

These types of inter-religious movements have been documented over the long term in the Mediterranean in general and the Balkans in particular. The Ottoman Empire, for example, was a fertile breeding ground for this type of interaction, which often took place on the margins of religious orthodoxy. The work of the British historian Frederick Hasluck (Christianity and Islam Under the Sultans, 1929) is a pioneering work in this field. These past and contemporary phenomena generate a series of ritual borrowings, acculturations, discourses and appropriations that make it possible to conceive of the religious field as particularly dynamic and characterised by porosity and fluidity.

Scientific programme

The work carried out to date has mainly consisted of monographic breakthroughs combined with comparative analyses, often on the vast scale of the Mediterranean. This SFD proposes to bring together students whose work focuses on the Balkans but also on the Mediterranean world, in order to encourage comparative reflections and discussions. One of the aims will be to ask whether there are any dynamics specific to the Balkans, compared with other areas such as the Middle East or the Maghreb, which are characterised by a form of withdrawal and retraction of the heterodox practices concerned. Activities will also include combined approaches on visual studies, museology and multimodal anthropology.

This doctoral summer school will consist of five themed days:

  • Day 1: Historical perspectives. Interwoven religiosities
  • Day 2: Coexistence in action: rituals, materialities, architectures, topographies
  • Day 3: Reconfigurations, redeployments and questioning
  • Day 4: Methodology: data collection, issues, difficulties within the fieldwork
  • Day 5: Methodology: public restitutions of the research

Each day will include several complementary sequences designed to encourage exchanges and discussions between students and supervisors:

  • 1 Keynote presentation by a supervising specialist
  • 2-3 case studies presented by students
  • 1 general discussion
  • Film productions, photographic series or cartographic approaches (GIS) will punctuate the sessions.

A ½-day excursion into the capital should also be proposed.

Application form and practical details

Applications from master and doctoral students in anthropology and history will be given priority, but proposals from other disciplines will also be considered. The selection committee will pay particular attention to works that include an approach to materiality and visuality. In this respect, visual elements may be added as an appendix.

The training seminar will take place at the École française d’Athènes (Didotou 6, Athens 106 80, Greece) from the 30th of June to the 4th of July 2025. It is open to PhD students and Master 2 students. 

Accommodation in Athens (arrival on June 29 June, departure on July 5) and meals (from June 30 to July 4) will be provided by the École française d’Athènes. Travel to Athens is the responsibility of the participants, who will need to seek support from their centres, departments or doctoral schools.

Ph.D. Research Grant Announcement 2025/26

The Orient-Institut Istanbul is pleased to invite applications for Ph.D. research grants for 2025/26. The purpose of the grant is to provide support for research in Turkey to Ph.D. candidates not living in Turkey.

During the duration of the scholarship no other scholarship may be obtained, and no paid employment positions may be taken.

Grants are preferably available to support research in one of the institute’s research areas, https://oiist.org/en/research-profile/  namely

  1. Musicological research on the Ottoman Empire and Turkey
  2. Narrative sources on Istanbul and the Ottoman Empire
  3. Past and contemporary forms of religious expression in the regions investigated at the OII (since the 11th century)
  4. Turkology (Linguistics and Literary Studies)
  5. Iran
  6. Entanglements between Turkish or Ottoman society, culture and literatures on the one, and Southeast Europe, the Mediterranean, Iran, The Caucasus and Eastern Europe on the other side. The migration of academics and artists is part of this field
  7. Ottoman modernities
  8. Science, Technology, and Society with a topic relating to Turkey

The research grant consists of a monthly stipend of € 1,200 for the duration of usually ten to twelve months. Short term grants of up to 90 days may also be made available. Travel expenses of a journey to and from Turkey will be reimbursed. Start of the scholarship should be at the earliest February 15th, 2025 and at latest September 15th, 2025.

Prospective applicants are expected to hold an M.A. degree in a related academic discipline. As a rule, a complete application is to demonstrate the necessity of conducting research in Istanbul or Turkey at large. If, in exceptional cases, the fellowship is not, or only partially, spent in Istanbul, a close connection to the institute is required. Upon consultation this may also be arranged through supervision by members of the Orient-Institut’s Scientific Advisory Board or other scholars associated with the institute.

Good command of Turkish or another source language necessary for the proposed project is obligatory. As the Orient-Institut Istanbul aims at creating an open and supportive academic environment, grant holders are expected to attend colloquia and conferences organised by the institute and to give a presentation of their own research. Research stays outside Istanbul must be cleared with the institute’s director.

Le jury mandaté par l’Institut français d’études anatoliennes examinera les candidatures à une aide à la mobilité pour doctorant.e prenant effet en fonction des disponibilités du/de la candidat.e retenu.e et des possibilités d’accueil de l’Institut, à partir du 1er octobre 2025.

L’aide à la mobilité sera attribuée pour un montant total de 9000 €, déclinés en 9 mensualités de 1000 euros, éventuellement renouvelable 1 fois (à partir de l’automne 2026).

Les conditions de résidence pourront être aménagées en fonction des démarches d’obtention du titre de séjour.

Les candidat.e.s doivent être titulaires d’un Master de recherche et inscrits en doctorat dans une université française à la prise de poste (aucune condition de nationalité). Les candidat.e.s ne devront pas bénéficier de financement contractuel pendant la durée de l’aide à la mobilité internationale.

Les recherches devront s’inscrire dans l’un des trois pôles de l’IFEA: le pôle études contemporaines, le pôle histoire et le pôle archéologie.

Les connaissances du turc et des milieux universitaires turcs sont souhaitées.

La sélection se fera sur examen de dossier.

L’aide annuelle consiste en une allocation mensuelle de 1000 euros net, du remboursement d’un voyage France – Istanbul – France (sur la base du prix d’un billet classe économique) et d’une couverture médicale.

La personne retenue devra résider en Turquie. Il/elle recevra l’appui scientifique et logistique de l’IFEA et participera à l’animation scientifique de l’institut, prendra part régulièrement à ses activités (conférences, séminaires, colloques, publications, etc.).

Les Écoles françaises à l’étranger ont mis en place depuis 2012 un programme de résidence de chercheurs dans leurs établissements.
À l’École française d’Athènes, les enseignant(e)s-chercheur(e)s, les chercheur(e)s statutaires ou les post-doctorant(e)s sous contrat dans une institution de recherche ou dans un établissement d’enseignement supérieur et dont le projet de recherche nécessite un séjour en Grèce peuvent bénéficier de ce dispositif. Ils sont accueillis pour une durée d’un à trois mois afin de développer un projet s’inscrivant dans la programmation quinquennale de l’École française d’Athènes. Les projets proposés peuvent porter sur la Grèce, les Balkans et la Méditerranée orientale à toutes les périodes historiques. Toutes les disciplines des SHS sont concernées. Les projets associant des partenaires institutionnels de la région (universités, centres recherche, musées) seront particulièrement appréciés.

L’appel à candidature pour l’année 2025 est lancé.

Research Residency Program 2025

Since 2012, the French Schools Abroad have launched a research residency program within their institutions.
At the École française d’Athènes, faculty members, permanent researchers, or post-doctoral fellows under contract with a research institution or a higher education institution and whose research project requires a period of residence in Greece may be eligible. Resident researchers are hosted for a period of one to three months in order to develop a project that aligns with the research objectives and strategic axes of the 2022-2026 five-year plan of the École française d’Athènes. Proposed projects may focus on Greece, the Balkans, and the Eastern Mediterranean during all historical periods. All disciplines in the social sciences and humanities are included. Projects involving institutional partners in the region (universities, research centers, museums) will be particularly valued.

Sous l’autorité du Conseiller de coopération et d’action culturelle (COCAC) / Directeur de l’Institut Français de Grèce (IFG), vous contribuerez à l’attractivité de la France au travers de la politique d’influence en matière scientifique et universitaire.
Conduite par l’Ambassade de France, celle-ci passe par :
– la promotion de l’enseignement supérieur français,
– le soutien aux mobilités universitaires vers la France,
– l’aide au développement de programmes de formation conjoints et de formations délocalisées en Grèce,
– le renouvellement du débat d’idées et la promotion de l’excellence française dans ce domaine,
– l’encouragement et le soutien de la coopération franco-grecque dans les secteurs de la recherche et de l’innovation.
Par ailleurs, vous seconderez le COCAC dans le pilotage du Service de coopération et d’action culturelle (SCAC)/IFG et assurerez l’intérim en son absence.
Activités principales

Sous l’autorité du COCAC / Directeur de l’IFG, les activités se déclinent selon deux axes.

1) Appui au pilotage du SCAC/IFG s’agissant de :
– la définition des orientations stratégiques et à l’élaboration des priorités ainsi qu’à la programmation et au contrôle de l’exécution du budget de l’IFG.
– la coordination entre les annexes et pôles (coopération culturelle, universitaire, scientifique et éducative) et au pilotage du SCAC/IFG.

2) Développement de la coopération scientifique et universitaire au travers :
– de la conception et mise en œuvre de programmation pour faire vivre le débat d’idées ;
– de la proposition à la direction de l’IFG puis mise en œuvre de la programmation annuelle du service ;
– de la promotion des études supérieures en France et du pilotage de l’espace Campus France et des opérations de promotion ;
– de la conception et mise en œuvre des instruments dédiés à la mobilité des étudiants et chercheurs (fonds de mobilité pour la jeunesse grecque, remise en place d’un PHC, bourses de stages en entreprises…) ;
– du suivi des partenariats universitaires et scientifiques franco-grecs ;
– du développement du réseau des diplômés grecs de l’enseignement supérieur français et du cercle des amis de la France ;
– du développement de coopérations dans les secteurs de la recherche et de l’innovation (établissements d’enseignement supérieur, centres de recherche, incubateurs, pôles de compétitivité…) ;
– de la promotion de l’écosystème français de l’innovation et organisation d’événements sur l’innovation ;
